HIV and Tuberculosis:Choosing the Right Diagnostics To Challenge
Background:
India, withapproximately 1.3 million notified new cases of TB in 2012 and 44,000 HIV patients co-infected with TB, is staring at a problem of significant magnitude and it has been so for some years. The epidemic is being driven by unsuspected and / or undiagnosed cases. Limitations of conventional diagnostic tests for detection of TB in the HIV infected and vice versa contribute to the silent epidemic. Patients with HIV-TB co-infection also have a higher mortality. In 2010, it was estimated that 1/3rd of the dually infected died.
Compounding this scenario is the problem due to drug resistant TB. India has an MDRTB incidence in new cases of 3% and in retreatment cases of 15-20%. MDRTB co-infection is a significant problem in the HIV infected, with higher rates of MDR TB and significantly higher mortality.
It is only when infected patients are detected accurately early in disease, even in situations where the microbial burden is paucibacillary such as in TB co-infected HIV patients, can the problem be mitigated? Similarly, detecting HIV in TB patients is equally important if not more. Against the backdrop of current epidemiology, identifying the drug resistant status has become as important as detecting the presence of the disease causing agent for both these agents. A variety of newer phenotypic tests with improved detection and a reduced turnaround time are now available. Newer and simpler molecular platforms are beginning to provide hope for individual case management as well as for control of transmission.
The nation is trying its best to control these infections at individual levels as well as through coordinated programmes. TB is a curable disease and antiretroviral therapy is now available. The dual epidemic can be challenged with a concerted effort from all stakeholders beginning with a high index of suspicion. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of TB in PLHA (through early ART initiation) and early diagnosis and treatment of HIV in TB patients are essential for this to happen. This requires an understanding of the microbes, the disease, the co-infection, the collusion, and the role of diagnostics in preventing a catastrophe and casualty.
The present workshop has been organized with these objectives in mind. These objectives will be achieved through lectures delivered by experts in their respective fields followed by demonstration on conventional and recent diagnostics for TB and HIV. An understanding of the utility of recent diagnostics in better management of patients and thereby control of disease burden will help both clinicians and diagnostic labs in equal measure.
There is no registration fee, but registration is mandatory as the number of participants will be restricted to forty on a first come first serve basis.

HIV -Pregnancy
Pregnant females are a important group for detection, treatment and control of HIV...Some centres follow single drug regimen ,while some have multidrug regimen....Breast feeding is still a grey zone..Through this workshop we would like to focus on some of these issues
